Requirements and University List:
1. IELTS:
To get the Tier 4 general student visa, one must meet some requirements. According to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department, most of the non-EU citizens require the proof of English language proficiency. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most used tests to judge a person’s English language skills. The different areas that are assessed for the tier 4 general student visa are: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Minimum scores required in IELTS for UKVI:
There are different Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) levels that one needs to achieve in accordance with the visa that they are applying for.
Short Course/Foundation course (level 5): To apply for a short course or foundation degree or international year one or two separately, a minimum B1 level of English language is necessary. It is equivalent to 4.5 – 5 in IELTS and maintain the same score individually in all four of the skills.
Bachelor Course (level 6): To apply for a bachelor course one should have a B2 level of English. This is equivalent to 5.5 – 6 in IELTS as well as a 5.5 minimum score in each skill.
Masters Course (level 7): The UK master’s degree requires to have a B2 level of English. This is equivalent to 5.5 – 6 in IELTS as well as a 5.5 minimum score in each skill.
All universities and colleges in Britain accept the IELTS as an accurate test to judge a person’s English Language skills.
2. There are options available to study in UK without IELTS.
Certain Universities may choose to focus on the applicant’s prior education as a means of ascertaining if their repertoire is satisfactory or conduct internal test or any third party’s test to ensure the student has right proficiency in English.
A. Medium of Instruction (MOI)
Medium of Instruction (MOI) means that a student has completed the study at a Higher Education Institute (HEI) where every subject was taught in English. If the University authorities are convinced with MOI, students may get an exemption of IELTS.
Following are some Universities that accept Medium of Instruction letters to assess students’ English proficiency
• University of Kent
• Brunel University
• University of Strathclyde
• Ulster University
• University of Portsmouth
B. Internal English Test (Online Interview):
Another case where it may be possible to study in the UK without IELTS is through arranging an interview online. Some universities believe in conducting an interview through video on Skype. This allows them to assess the student’s ability and overall comprehension of English.
C. English Language Level Test (ELLT)
Some Universities accept the English Language Level Test (ELLT) tests taken at the Oxford International English Test Centre (OIETC) as alternative to IELTS. This is relatively easier than IELTS. It is a four-step assessment taken to ascertain English language level of a student and can be completed 100% online. On successful completion of all four steps of the assessment, students receive a certification and full report, allowing them to move forward and apply to university courses with proof of English without ever leaving their home.
This can work as a great alternative to IELTS for those students who are unable to travel to a test centre in their home country.
